What Is Going On With THPS5?
Hi everyone! After the last couple of days focusing on press conferences, there is quite a lot of news to round up as Gamescom comes to a close.
Let’s start with Tony Hawks Pro Skater 5. The long-awaited return to the Pro Skater series is now only two months away, and it now appears that the game has had an art style change! At Gamescom this week, Activision said that “there’s been a marked upgrade in the graphics” and we can see the result in the below image. This is a very strange thing to happen so close to release. I’m not sure if the cel shading is a good thing or not, but every time something is revealed for this game, it just seems off. I guess we don’t have to wait long to find out, but don’t set your hopes too high…
From long-awaited to annualised titles, Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate got itself a new trailer this week. Whilst the trailer is fine, the footage I was more interested in was the gameplay walkthrough that showed Evie Frye in action. Evie is the twin sister of Jacob — the protaginist we have seen previously — and she is the more stealth focused character. I like that they are trying to do something a little different with Assassin’s Creed, and I love the setting, but I’m still not sold on this game after last year’s burning. Maybe something will make me change my mind prior to its October 23rd release.
One game I’m definitely picking up is Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. With less than 4 weeks to go until release the hype and excitement is building and the latest gameplay didn’t help that. This wasn’t any mere trailer (although a new trailer was also released) but rather a 30 minute gameplay demo, showing off some of the features in the game along with Mother Base – your main HUB within the game. I’ll let you digest the demo yourself but my god I feel this game is almost too much to handle. I can already see this being another The Witcher III scenario, where I play the game for weeks and feel like I’ve gone nowhere!
Moving away from imminent releases for a moment, and 2K has revealed a release date for Battleborn. The latest FPS from Gearbox — the creators of Borderlands — is due to hit shelves on February 12th. The game centres around 4 play co-op play and has various MOBA elements to it. I’m not a big fan of MOBAs but, if the single player element is substantial enough, I could be interested. I love the art direction they are going with and the latest trailer, which you can see below, actually really makes me want to play this game as it just looks fun!
Closing out the news for the week and, following it’s release last Friday, Angry Bird 2 has already passed 20 million downloads! To put in perspective how big this is, it took the first Angry Birds 9 months to reach this figure and, let’s be honest, the original was a huge success in itself. I will admit I was one of the 20 million and, while the game does look and play better than its predecessor, the obligatory free-to-play features have been incorporated — like using real money to buy extra lives, birds or abilities. I know they will never go away, but I hate all these “pay to win” transactions now.
As always, here are your game releases for this week:
- Rare replay (Xbox One)
- Beyond Eyes (Xbox One)
- Submerged (PS4, Xbox One)
- Beatbuddy – Tale of Guardians (Xbox One)
- AeternoBlade (PS4)
- Galak-Z (PS4)
- Boggle (PS4, Xbox One)
- The Swindle (Xbox One)
Have a great weekend and I’ll be back on Monday!
