Gamescom Award: And The Winner Is…..

Hey everyone! So Gamescom if officially over and an independent international jury of experts have decided that the best game of the show was…

Star Wars: Battlefront. EA‘s upcoming multiplayer shooter took home the headline award ahead of stiff competition from such games as Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain — which took home the best Xbox and Action game awards — and Forza Motorsport 6 — which took home the best Racing and Simulation awards. Battlefront cleared up with five awards in total, obviously people are seeing something special in this game. I said in yesterday’s Game Of The Week Show that everything I see about this game looks amazing, but I just don’t know if I can get past the multiplayer only feature. I just don’t play online enough.

Moving on to a previous Gamescom award winner, and Destiny has a new voice for Ghost. Last week Bungie announced that Nolan North would be replacing Peter Dinklage as your Guardian’s companion in The Taken King. Not only that, but North would be re-recording the old lines and Dinklage would be removed from the game entirely. Apparently the reason for this is nothing more sinister than actor availability. I guess this does make sense, Dinklage is a busy man, but prior to this people may have wondered if Dinklage’s lacklustre monotone performance had anything to do with it.

Next up, Grand Theft Auto V has reached another substantial sales milestone. According to Take-Two Interactive‘s latest earnings, Rockstar‘s fantastic open-world adventure game has now sold-in 54 million copies. It is hard to comprehend this figure for a video game! To put it into perspective, Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 — the best-selling Call Of Duty game — only sold 26.5 million copies. I guess that is maybe the benefit to not annualising games.

I am a big advocate for being able to game on the go — by that I mean PS Vita, not iOS or Android — and it appears that a new contender could be on the way. Smach Zero is a Steam-Based handheld, and will be available for pre-order on November 10 ahead of a late 2016 release. The device will come with a 5 inch 720p screen and will support more than 1,000 games at launch. This device really intrigues me. We are seeing more and more “Steam consoles” but this particular device will depend on what games it actually can support. Unless it can support some AAA titles I’ll probably stick with my Vita.

Closing out todays news and from time to time you hear a story about someone who is just show off — this is one of those occasions. Reddit user GMABT has completed the notoriously hard Dark Souls, using only voice commands! If this wasn’t difficult enough, the hacked voice commands encountered a 1.5 second input delay. GMABT writes that after “30 hours of suffering, almost losing my voice several times, and 485 deaths later, I finally completed the game.” Ok I will admit this is an incredible effort, well done to GMABT!

That’s it for today. Until tomorrow,

Matt
