It’s Time For Free Game Friday

The weekend is here, and Telltale Games has some extra good news for us gamers…

Episode One from the Tales From The Borderlands series is now available for free on PS4, Xbox One, PS3 and Xbox 360. The episode, titled Zer0 Sum, is the first of a five-episode series that takes place in Gearbox’s quirky Borderlands universe. In coordination with this gesture, Telltale also confirmed that the final episode – The Vault Of The Traveler – will be launching on October 20th. I’m very excited to try this episode out. I am a fan of previous Telltale games, but never quite got hooked by Borderlands. This now give to the opportunity to trial what I hear this is one of Telltale’s strongest series’.

It wouldn’t be a news day without some mention of Halo. Well Microsoft has revealed a new launch trailer for Halo: The Fall of Reach, an upcoming animated series based on the 2001 novel of the same name. The series will show the origins of Master Chief and the Spartan program. Ok so this technically isn’t video game news, but this definitely something fans of the Halo universe will want to check out before the launch of Halo 5: Guardians on October 27th. If you have not pre-ordered the Limited Edition that comes with the series, you can check it out here.

Staying with the Xbox One, and we now have confirmation of when Battlefield: Hardline will be joining the EA Access Vault. We previously had confirmation that it would be coming in October, but we now know that the exact day will be next Wednesday, October 14th. I don’t want to sound like a broken record, but I really think that EA Access is a good deal for gamers. I’m looking forward to checking out Battlefield: Hardline at some point and, with other titles such as Dragon Age: Inquisition, the £30 annual price point represents real value.

One more Xbox story but this time a little more disappointing, especially for collectors. The retail version of Shovel Knight has been cancelled. In making the announcement, Yacht Club Games claimed that there are “publishing polices on the [Xbox One] that are beyond our control.” It is sad to hear that certain policies are restricting the release of a physical version, especially when the PS4, Wii U, 3DS, and PC version are unaffected (as far as we know). Luckily, Xbox One owners can still get the digital version of the game, which you should most definitely do — Shovel Knight is truly a fantastic game.

Finally, if this week’s new releases (see below) don’t interest you, then the Star Wars: Battlefront beta is currently live! Yes DICE‘s upcoming sci-fi shooter is available to play this weekend on PS4, Xbox One and PC. The beta, which runs until October 12th, features 40-player Walker Assault and Drop Zone modes, along with a single Survival Mission. I think I’ll wait for the EA Access trial, Halo and Uncharted will be taking up the rest of my October.

Here are this week’s game releases:

Have a great weekend everyone!
