Final Fantasy VII Remake To Be Split Up

Following the new gameplay trailer at this weekend’s PSX we have some more Final Fantasy VII Remake news, and it isn’t all good…

Change seems to be the order of the day for Final Fantasy VII Remake. The gameplay trailer at PSX showed a more action heavy combat system and now Square Enix has revealed that the game will be released in a “multi-part series.” In explaining the rationale for this format, Yoshinori Kitase said the following:

“Producing a proper HD remake of Final Fantasy 7 that maintains the same feeling of density of the original results in a volume of content that couldn’t possibly fit into one installment.”

Being a relative unknown when it comes to Final Fantasy VII, I can’t say this news upsets me to the extent that it has some fans. While I don’t agree with the prospect of Square Enix milking the fans, you can look at it that by releasing the game in parts you will at least get some of the game earlier than you otherwise would have.

We have some bad news for fans of Ubisoft‘s The Division. The beta, which was due to arrive this month on Xbox One, has now been delayed until 2016. However Xbox owners should not get too downbeat, if they have pre ordered the game they will get access to a closed alpha that launched tomorrow (9th December). The closed Alpha will run until Saturday 12 December. Ubisoft’s post-apocalyptic shooter is still scheduled for a March release and I’m very excited for the game. I just hope that there is a substantial single player experience, I don’t want to rely on other gamers.

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End was shown at the PSX conference this past weekend and now we have another cinematic trailer. The trailer focuses on a new character who goes by the name of Nadine Ross. The role of Ross is being portrayed by Laura Bailey, who was previously confirmed as a cast member for the game. Unfortunately there are people on the Internet who are unhappy (there’s a surprise) because Ross is black and Bailey is white. Neil Druckmann defended the decision by saying that Bailey nailed the audition and that there was “no question” in their minds that Bailey was Ross, and likewise that the image design of Ross’ character was “awesome.” I can’t believe that people consider these sort of things an issue, Naughty Dog has acted in the way we should all want them to, by employing the best person for the role no matter their gender, race etc. People need to get over themselves.

Moving onto some happier news before I get into a full rant, Gone Home is coming to PS4 and Xbox One next month! The 2013 story exploration game will be arriving on January 12th and will include an additional 90 minutes of behind-the-scenes commentary. Gone Home truly is a special game, and is one that as many gamers as possible should experience. January is the perfect time to release too as it is the probably the quietest month for games — make sure you go play it!

More good news about upcoming releases, it appears that the original Max Payne will be coming to PS4! While no official release has been confirmed, the game has appeared on the Entertainment Software Rating Board, which is normally a good indication that a game is coming. It also follows the recent release of the first batch of PS2 games on Sony‘s latest console. If you haven’t played Max Payne before, this up-scaled version would be a good opportunity to dive in.

That’s all for today,

Matt
